PROP 65 ALERT: Glyphosate Added to Prop 65 Chemical List

Today, Prop 65's list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive harm, will grow once again. Proposition 65, also known as California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, requires businesses operating or selling products in the state of California to provide a warning when individuals are exposed to chemicals with certain hazardous properties.

Glyphosate, the world’s second most used systemic herbicide, and crop desiccant has been officially added to the Prop 65 chemical list. Manufacturers and retailers who use the Glyphosate will have to label their products accordingly.

What Is the Prop 65 Chemical List?

The Prop 65 chemicals list contains over 900 chemicals that are determined by the state of California to cause cancer or reproductive harm.

Despite the fierce opposition by Monsanto, agricultural biotechnology giant who uses Glyphosate in their commonly known product, RoundUp, Glyphosate was added to the Prop 65 chemical list on June 6th, 2017, for its cancer-causing agents. At press time, there is no significant risk level for glyphosate, but the OEHHA is currently reviewing and proposing a safe harbor level.

The addition of Glyphosate and the new Prop 65 warning label requirements are a clear indication that the OEHHA not only plans to uphold California Proposition 65, but also strengthen the regulation.
